Around half the putters in any club car park are mallets, and most cover orders still default to a blade pattern. The result fits half the recipients.

Two shapes, two patterns

A blade is long heel-to-toe and slim front-to-back; its cover is a sleeve the head slides into sideways.

A mallet is deep front-to-back; its cover closes over the back of the head, face-first. These are different garments. Stretching one into the other produces a cover that gapes at the back and falls off forward.

Why it matters beyond fit

A putter face is milled, and the milling is the most damage-sensitive surface in the bag. A half-fitting cover exposes it exactly where the wedges ride next door.

And a loose cover obeys the first law of this category: anything that can rock off, eventually does, and is lost rather than broken.

The one question that fixes it

“What putters are in play?” For a society or member day, the honest answer is a mix — so quote a blade/mallet split in the same design. It costs almost nothing extra and everyone’s cover actually fits.
